Illinois Legislation Would Offer Renters and Homeowners Financial Relief and Protections

No one should fear losing their home during the COVID-19 crisis

Everyone deserves access to safe, stable housing, especially during a pandemic. Shelter is not only a basic human need, it is also critical to people’s ability to pursue and attain economic security.

In collaboration with the Right to Recovery Coalition, the Lift the Ban Coalition, the Lawyer’s Committee for Better Housing, and the Shriver Center on Poverty Law, State Representative Delia C. Ramirez (HD-4) is proposing the COVID-19 Emergency and Economic Recovery Renter and Homeowner Protection Act.

“We recognize we have had issues around housing way before this pandemic. There is no way to talk about public health without talking about the impact that housing instability has. We can’t ask people to shelter in place if they have no shelter,” Rep. Ramirez said during a virtual press conference.

The COVID-19 Emergency and Economic Recovery Renter and Homeowner Protection Act would:

  • Provide financial relief for renters and landlords in need;
  • Provide homeowner and renter protections including a 180-day moratorium on foreclosure and eviction proceedings;
  • Protect Illinoisans from discrimination so that they have a fair chance to secure housing.
