Click above to listen to Episode 7 of "The Witness," our podcast of firsthand stories from attorneys and advocates who are on the front lines of fighting for people living in poverty.
This episode is the first in our new miniseries about the Shriver Center’s own Racial Justice Institute. Over the past five years, the Racial Justice Institute has equipped more than 200 fellows from around the country to practice community-led advocacy in pursuit of racial justice. These episodes were recorded at the inaugural convening of Racial Justice Institute fellows in Chicago in June 2018.
This episode features a conversation between the Shriver Center's Kimberly Merchant and Kevin Herrera. Kim, the Shriver Center's Racial Justice Director, leads and provides strategic oversight for RJI and its advocacy network. Kevin, the Shriver Center's Legal Impact Network attorney, supports this growing action network of antipoverty organizations across the country. They talk about their unique journeys through the Racial Justice Institute.
It's very few and far between that people can resonate with your story and understand what it's like to have people you care about be subject to the problems you are trying to solve.
