A Comprehensive Look at the Civil Right to Counsel Across the United States

Clearinghouse Review published Laura K. Abel and Max Rettig’s 2006 article laying out the right-to-counsel laws across the United States. An updated state-by-state survey shows that the civil right to counsel has expanded nationwide for parents, defendants facing civil contempt, and prisoners, but immigrants in immigration proceedings face several hurdles to affordable and accessible justice.
