Efforts by Restricted and Unrestricted Civil Legal Aid Programs to End Practices that Unjustly Target the Poor

Restricted and unrestricted legal aid organizations have a significant role to play in curbing the harsh impact of criminal justice debt on the poor and communities of color. In Iowa, Washington, and beyond, advocates have used litigation, policy reform, and other tools to end unjust laws and court practices that punish poverty and create lifetime harms. Much more work remains to be done.
