No. BC 284538 (Cal. Super. Ct., Los Angeles County, Nov. 23, 2004) ; Clearinghouse Number: 55903
Description
Nonlawyer Who Targeted Spanish-Speaking Community Pleads Guilty to Contempt for Violating Injunction Against Practicing Law or Similar Legal Functions
Abstract
Plaintiff low-income monolingual Spanish speakers asked the court
to hold defendant nonlawyer in contempt for violating a 2003
injunction against his practicing law or working on law-related
matters requiring a license. Plaintiffs had earlier sued defendant
and a company he formed for practicing law and giving legal
assistance without a license in violation of California law. In
2004 Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County hired two
testers who found that defendant continued to hold himself out as a
lawyer, give legal advice, and practice law by handling a variety
of legal matters, including immigration, divorce, and bankruptcy.
Defendant pleaded guilty to two counts of contempt and is required
to file with the court a periodic report on his source of income.
