Manchaca v. Chater
No. 9:90CV 81 (E.D. Tex. Aug. 29, 1995) ; Clearinghouse Number: 45976
Description
Social Security Administration Agrees to Assist Applicants and Beneficiaries on Food Stamp Applications at Social Security Offices
Abstract
The parties have settled this class action challenging the failure
of the Social Security Administration (SSA) to ensure that social
security and SSI applicants are informed about and helped with
their food stamp applications while in local social security
offices. Plaintiffs had alleged that SSA did not give out
simplified food stamp application forms at social security offices,
allow SSI recipients to apply for food stamps at such offices, or
certify SSI recipients for food stamp eligibility with information
already in SSA files. Under the terms of the settlement, SSA agreed
to the development and dissemination of specific public information
materials, including posters, leaflets, and pamphlets; to make
current food stamp application forms available at all of its field
offices in well-marked locations; to change the order and language
of the food stamp questions on the Modernized Supplemental Security
Income Claim System; and to train SSA employees regarding expedited
service for food stamps.
