In the shadow of the war in Vietnam and assassinations and rebellion at home, Sargent Shriver launched a string of social inventions that touched more lives than any leader has since Franklin Roosevelt’s
New Deal.

Shriver opened pathways to civic involvement—Peace Corps, Head Start, VISTA, and Legal Services—for a generation of youthful volunteers to change the country. Largely unknown today, the story of “Sarge” Shriver will inspire viewers with its moving illustration of the difference leaders can make when they see America as an act of the imagination and look to the young to shape it.

“American Idealist is wonderful…it should be on the shelves of every schoolhouse in America.”
--John Bridgeland, Director of the White House Policy Council (2000-2002), and USA Freedom Corps

“Splendid… the best depiction of the War on Poverty that I have ever seen on film.”
--Darlene Clark Hine, past president of the Organization of American Historians and Board of Trustees Professor of African American Studies and History at Northwestern University
