Federal laws enacted in 1996 restricted further the representation of immigrants by programs funded by the Legal Services Corporation (LSC). The Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2002 expanded the categories of immigrants that LSC grantees may represent with LSC funds. If battered immigrants or "mixed families" are involved, legal services may be provided without regard to immigration status. LSC regulations specify the immigrant categories that LSC-funded programs may represent.
