Walter Mosley to Speak About Poverty in America
Mystery writer and social activist is featured speaker at the Shriver Center 2006 Awards Dinner
Who: The Sargent Shriver National Center on
Poverty Law is pleased to announce that Walter Mosley, acclaimed
mystery writer and social commentator, will be the featured speaker at
the Shriver Center 2006 Awards Dinner.
What: We are honored to welcome Walter Mosley,
who, as an active voice for people in poverty, shares the vision of the
Shriver Center. Through his essays, lectures, and nonfiction works,
Mosley advances the cause of social and economic justice by advocating
the public good and by giving voice to people rarely heard. In Workin’
on the Chain Gang, What Next: A Memoir Toward World Peace, and Life Out
of Context, Mosley examines ways that the African American perspective
can contribute to political and social progress in the United States.
He dares the American public to throw off the “chains” of complacency
and ignorance and challenges America’s institutions and the world’s
propensity for never-ending wars. He empowers citizens to speak truth
to power.
Some 700 guests, including public officials, leaders from the legal,
business, and nonprofit communities, will attend the Shriver Center’s
2006 Awards Dinner, the eighth since 1999. The 2006 Sargent Shriver
Award for Equal Justice will be presented to Paula E. Boggs and Raul
Yzaguirre at the event.
